A recent study by the Discovery Partners Institute is shedding light on a critical equity issue that we cannot afford to ignore: access to technology careers and computer science education in Illinois. The findings from DPI's "Exploring Computer Science Education Structures and Pathways in Illinois" reveal that only 7.5% of high school students in Illinois enroll in at least one computer science course. This startlingly low figure underscores a broader issue: a majority of students are either not afforded the opportunity or do not see themselves taking advantage of the opportunities in computer science education due to prevailing stereotypes that paint CS as overly challenging or suited only for a select few.It's crucial we work together to demystify computer science, making it accessible and appealing to all students from an early age. By doing so, we can ensure a more diverse, equitable, and innovative future for the tech industry.Let's commit to changing narratives, enhancing access, and promoting success in computer science education for every learner, regardless of their background. This week is #ComputerScienceEducationWeek! According to the 2023 State of Computer Science Education Report, 57.5% of public high schools in the US offer a foundational computer science class this year, up from 53% last year.Rhode Island was successful in connecting Career Technical Education (CTE) with computer science, where four high schools transformed their three-course computer science pathway into a CTE program. Since the start of their Computer Science for Rhode Island High School Grant in 2019, “1,080 students have entered CS pathways, with 81% from historically underrepresented student groups”. So I’m deep into my literature review for my PHD, and one issue found was that students enter computer science degree courses with little or no awareness of digital accessibility and yet we live in a ‘digital first’ society. Isn’t it time to address this in primary education and bring the topic in at the same time as young people learn about online safety. Let’s introduce and reinforce the basic seeds of digital accessibility principles early and throughout education as a lifelong mainstream ability and skill. #a11y #DigitalAccessibility #LearnToEnable #AccessibleAcorns Really looking forward to exploring and testing this out in schools next academic year.
