Say what? I can make donuts in my air fryer? That’s right. This little countertop appliance can do so much, baking included.

Skip the deep fried, big pot of hot oil and bring on a healthier version of good old donut.

Air fryer donuts are fun to make and easy enough that you can get the kids involved. With just a few simple ingredients you’ve got yourself some semi-homemade donuts.

I’ve seen so many variations of this on the internet and thought I had to give it a try.

If you haven’t gotten an air fryer yet, this is the one that I have .

If you are looking for other air fryer recipe check these out:

  • Furikake salmon
  • Honey garlic chicken wings
  • Maple candied bacon
  • Sweet potato fries

And for some other breakfast ideas try Instant Pot egg bites, homemade acai bowls, or Instant Pot yogurt.

What do I need to make ube glazed air fryer donuts?

  • Powdered sugar
  • Milk. You can use fat free, 1%, 2%, whole milk, or the nut milk alternative of your choice here.
  • Ube extract. You can find this in the Asian section of your grocery store or the Asian specialty markets. If you are unable to find this locally you can always get it on Amazon,
  • Vanilla extract. Check out my recipe for homemade Instant Pot vanilla extract
  • Pilsbury Grands biscuit dough. You can use any variation you’d like. I like to use the flaky layers butter tastin’ one.

What other toppings can I use?

Let your imagination run wild and dress these air fryer donuts up any way you like. You can make a plain glaze, cinnamon sugar, sprinkles, or just eat it plain. The possibilities are endless.

How to store air fryer donuts?

These donuts are best eaten fresh, however if you do end up with some left over donuts you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature. These donuts will dry out more quickly than your regular deep fried donuts as there was no oil in the baking process. I would not recommend storing in the refrigerator as this will dry out the donuts even more.

Can you freeze these donuts?

Yes. If you would like to freeze them I would suggest freezing the donuts unglazed. You can then reheat in the air fryer and glaze at that time when ready to eat.

How to make ube glazed air fryer donuts?

Pre heat air fryer to 350F.

In a small bowl combine powdered sugar, milk, ube extract, and vanilla extract. Whisk to combine until smooth.

Open biscuit can and place biscuits on a cutting board. Using a 1 inch round cookie cutter, cut out the center hole of the donuts. You can keep the donut holes to air fry as well.

Spray the basket of the air fryer with non-stick cooking spray. Place donuts in basket with space between each donut. It’s best not to stack these while cooking. You may need to cook these in two batches. Air fry for 3 minutes.

Once the three minutes are up, open the drawer and flip donuts over. Close drawer and air fry for another 2-3 minutes.

Once air frying has completed remove donuts and allow to cool slightly. Then dip donut in to ube glaze and allow to completely cool on a wire cooling rack over a cookie sheet to catch excess drips. Enjoy!

I love the Ube glaze. I found sugar free Ube jam at the Asian store and I make Ube cookies and brownies. Love the flavor and even spread it on my toast. Thanks for the great glaze recipe.

FAQs

Can you air fry donuts instead of deep fry? ›

For air fryer doughnuts, I spray the doughnuts with coconut oil before cooking at 350°F in the air fryer. It takes some experimenting, but ultimately I determine that yeast-raised doughnuts need about 4 minutes and cake-style doughnuts about 7 minutes.

What makes donuts soggy? ›

Don't crowd the pan

Cooking only two to four donuts at a time will keep the oil temp from dropping too far during cooking. If you put six donuts in at once, there's a good chance your oil temp will plummet, and you'll get greasy, soggy donuts.

Can you put a Krispy Kreme in the air fryer? ›

I'm thrilled that I've found a way to indulge in one of my favorite treats without having to compromise on calorie counting. If you're a Krispy Kreme fan, then definitely give these air-fried donuts a go.

Why are my mini donuts not fluffy? ›

Underproofed – leads to stiffer (denser) donuts that don't puff up well when fried. Cracked donuts – this may have happened if you used a cutter and it wasn't sharp enough to cut through the dough cleanly. Or the dough is underproofed or too cold.

Are donuts better in air fryer or deep fryer? ›

Doughnut's crust formation during deep fat frying was more dependent on temperature than that of hot air fried ones. Hot air frying of doughnut reduced crust roughness and created a smoother surface compared to the deep fat fried samples. Decreasing the frying temperature for both methods increased the crust roughness.

Is it better to bake or fry Doughnuts? ›

While many prefer the light and crispy texture of a fried donut, leaving the deep fryer in the cabinet and baking your cake donuts instead makes for healthier, less oily donuts. It's also safer and easier to clean up, given that you don't have to deal with lots of hot oil.

What oil is best for frying donuts? ›

What kind of oil is best for cooking donuts? The best oil is the one with the least flavour. Vegetable oil and canola oil are both very good in this respect. The most important thing is to use the same oil for the same kinds of foods, since oil readily absorbs flavours and aromas.

What is the best oil for frying donuts? ›

Some of the best options on the market are canola oil and sunflower oil as they are neutral oils that are widely available and sold at a great price point. Canola oil specifically is the one of the best choices because it has a light color, mild flavor and a high smoke point making it ideal for frying donuts.

Do air fryer donuts taste good? ›

In my opinion, this recipe for air fried donuts comes very close to the deep fried version. I wouldn't say they're better or worse—both are utterly delicious!

How does Krispy Kreme make their donuts so fluffy? ›

A batch of original glazed starts with Krispy Kreme doughnut mix, water and yeast, the same single-cell fungi used to make bread rise. The yeast is what makes the original glazed so light -- it puffs the dough up with air, so it's not dense like a cake doughnut (more on this later).

What is the Krispy Kreme glaze made of? ›

The secret to Krispy Kreme doughnuts is of course the sweet glaze, and this is achieved by bathing the doughnuts in a glaze of icing sugar, vanilla extract and milk, for a thicker glaze increase the quantity of icing sugar by a few spoons.

Can you buy donut mixture? ›

Sephra Standard Donut Mix is sold in a convenient 3Kg bag. The only ingredient you need to add is water for this simple and easy recipe. 3Kg of Sephra Donut Mix will make approximately 125 Donuts. A 12kg case will make approximately 500 Donuts.

What are the airy donuts called? ›

Yeast Doughnut

These doughnuts are also known as "raised doughnuts," as yeast is used as a leavener, which creates the air pockets when frying the batter that results in their signature light and airy texture. They're less likely to be crumbly, due to their spongy consistency, and can be glazed, frosted, or filled.

How do you make donuts soft again? ›

So, what if you didn't prepare and now have a stale donut on your hands? We've got a solution for that, too. Pop it into the microwave for approximately 15 seconds until it softens. It might not be perfect, but it should still be a delicious treat.

What is the alternative to deep frying donuts? ›

Oven Baking

If you are looking for a healthier alternative to deep frying, baking your donuts in the oven is a fantastic option: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet. Prepare your donut dough as per your recipe and shape them into traditional donut shapes.

How do you deep fry donuts without a deep fryer? ›

On a medium, heavy-bottomed pan, heat about 2-3 inches of oil to 375 F. Carefully lower a few donuts at a time into the oil, peeling them off from the parchment paper before cooking. Cook on one side for 2-3 minutes, or until golden. Then cook on the other side for 1 minute or less, until golden.
