FAQs

How long to cook ground beef? ›

(Remember, a bit of pink is okay if the meat registers 160°F.) On most stove tops, browning a pound of ground beef takes approximately 7 to 10 minutes. Remember, it's important to continue stirring and breaking the pieces into the same size with the wooden spoon or heatproof spatula so the ground beef cooks evenly.

How do you know when ground beef is done in a pan? ›

Ground beef cooks quite fast. It doesn't need more than 5 minutes (depending on the base of your pan and the amount of meat of course). Just take a piece and rip/cut it open. If it's brown inside, and not red or pink, it's fully cooked.

How to cook ground beef in a pan on the stove? ›

Start by heating a large skillet or pan over medium-high heat. Once the pan is hot, add a small amount of oil (if desired) and then add the ground beef. Break up the meat with a spatula or wooden spoon to help it cook evenly. Cook the beef until it is browned and fully cooked through, stirring occasionally.

Does ground beef need to be fully cooked? ›

However, when beef is ground, bacteria from its surface are mixed throughout the meat as it is chopped into tiny pieces. That means ground beef—and all other ground meats, like ground chicken, turkey, pork or lamb, which are processed the same way—must be cooked all the way through in order to kill the bacteria.

Why must ground beef be cooked at 155? ›

Killing Bacteria in Ground Beef

You cannot kill the bacteria by freezing ground beef. Instead, the bacteria will remain dormant while the meat is frozen and becomes active once thawed. Cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 155°F is the only way to destroy the germs.
